ABOUT ME

I am a creative textile designer that creates beautiful and non-traditional modern quilts

REDEFINING QUILTING

A designer dad in Berlin, by way of Stockholm and Washington DC, Scott Culley has over 20 years of design experience. Scott is a upcycled architect who can’t sit still: he quilts, builds, photographs, and cooks. As a Textile artist, he uses foundation paper piecing to create vibrate and complex quilts.   As an architect, Scott has planned and designed proton cancer treatment centers at many of the major hospitals in the US. He is a full-time father to a 3 and a 7 year-old and husband (My Husband is 40).

MY WORK

PROCESS IS EVERYTHING

It must be my Architecture background, but the process of any project is where true beauty lies.   My quilts are labors of love. The process of large quilts can take up to a year from start to finish.

Concept

I will come up with a theme for a group of quilts to work on. Then create 3-4 images for that theme.  These generally get nurtured with research and writings.

Image Design

Using a combination of Photoshop and Illustrator I create a number of images to go with the selected concept.

Pattern Design

Once an image is finalized, I start creating the Foundation Paper Piecing pattern. This is a process of dividing up the image into sewable blocks.

Quilt Constuction

Once the pattern is printed and cut out and the fabric is ordered construction can start. For a large quilt like the Luchado or the Ofrenda quilts, this took 3-4 months to complete.

Quilting of Layers

Once the quilt top is complete. It is time to quilt. Based on the image I’ll develop a quilting strategy and get to sewing. I generally do not do a lot of heavy design into the quilting, as to not detract from the image.
